REACH GEBLO
He is a sculptor and graffiti artist. The artist who grew up in Istanbul discovered graffiti in the early 2000s. He graduated from Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture. In recent years, he had the opportunity to exhibit his work in international projects and collaborations with some essential brands.
Reach Geblo, as a contemporary and conceptual artist in the field of graffiti, is deeply interested in the versatility of language and the cultural meanings that words carry. In his artistic practice, he argues that language is not only a means of communication, but also a system of symbols open to constant interpretation and transformation. Inspired by Ferdinand de Saussure's linguistic theory, he is interested in signs, which are the building blocks of language, and the signifier and signified of these signs.Geblo explores the relationship between the elements of the signified and the signified in his works.
The artist often uses red and blue tones in his work to symbolise the illegal nature of graffiti and the relationship between street art and the police. By integrating the red and blue lights of police sirens into his work, he reminds viewers of the social and political context behind his art. These colours offer a clue to the actions of street art and invite the viewer to become aware of this tension.
At the centre of his formal language is a passion for the form of letters and the meaning of words. Embracing the idea that the meaning of language is arbitrary, Reach Geblo pushes the boundaries of writing, experimenting with new letterforms in terms of legibility and expressiveness. This approach, which challenges the traditional understanding of typography and calligraphy, brings with it a concept unique to his own art practice, which he calls ‘TYPOGRAFFITI’. Typograffiti is a form of expression that blends writing and typography with graffiti, bringing together elements of street art and urban culture. With this technique, Geblo redefines both legibility and aesthetic perception.
